The story of a baby born into a Poor House in Ontario. The baby's mother died shortly after her birth and the child was raised in the Poor House until she was of age to be bound out as a servant. She was eventually adopted, educated and love but returns to the village and Poor House at age twenty to find out the circumstances surrounding her mother's admission to the County work house.

Love conquers all but Anna, A Child of the Poor House is not a love story in the "bodice ripping" sort of way. It's the story of a young woman who, through great odds, finds family, love and friends. The story is poignant, humorous and particularly true as the story is based on a true character whom the author had the pleasure of meeting a number of years ago.

Pat Mattaini Mestern is the author other previous books, including No Choice but Freedom and Magdalena's Song. She writes travel, lifestyle, and local history columns for a variety of national and international publications. She lives in Fergus, Ontario.
