The Triskele;

Derived from the Greek word "Triskeles" meaning "three legs", the Triskele or Triple Spiral is a complex ancient Celtic symbol.

Often referred to by many as a Triskelion, its earliest creation dates back to the Neolithic era, as it can be seen at the entrance of Newgrange, Ireland (dating back 3200 BC).  It is regarded as one of the oldest Irish symbols in existence.

Symbolism

  • It is believed to signify energies,  cycles, progress, revolution and competition.
  • The three triple spiral symbols are believed to represent the sacred three: life-death-rebirth, spirit-mind-body, mother-father-child, past-present-future, power-intellect-love and creation-preservation-destruction, above-below-within.
  •  It is also believed to represent the Celts three realms of material existence:  earth, water, and sky (and all that connected them) - and - The three worlds:  spiritual, physical and celestial.

Like the ancient Trinity knot, the number 3 holds a special symbolism within the triskele.

Feminine Divine Triad - The "triple goddess"

Triple Spiral (celtic meaning) represents the drawing of the three powers of maiden, mother and crone. It is a sign of female power and especially power through transition and growth.

  • This theory states that at the Newgrange monument, the triskele is meant to symbolize pregnancy.
  • The Triskelion is a Celtic symbol for mother and her many aspects. The triple spiral represents the various phases of womanhood (Maiden, Mother, Crone)(Mother,Daughter, Grandmother), the passing of time, and the unity of these diverse dimensions.
  • In modern times it has become known as a symbol of female power.
